Here is the video from the talk I gave last week at Cru on 1 John 1:1-10. There were a few things on the power point that didn't make it in the video so I am including the graphics of them here.
Seeing Jesus as "Black and White" from uicru on Vimeo.
A way that many people view the Christian life that can lead to performance and self-righteousness:
A way to view the Christian Life that brings repentance and transformation.
1 John 1:1-10
1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— 2 the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us— 3 that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4 And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.
Your talk was great, Jess! I definitely appreciated your emphasis on truth.
ReplyDeleteI found interesting the part with the graphs. I'm familiar with both of them from Cru and I think they're both helpful. I've never seen them pitted against each other like you did in the talk, though.
It's funny because I had just gone through the fourth follow up with a newcomer and shown him the first graph the day before. It was kindof awkward then sitting next to him when you argued that it wasn't a good way to view the Christian life. Do you think that we should modify the fourth follow up to remove that graph?
Keifer, that is a good point you bring up. So sorry for the potential awkwardness that caused! haha.. I should communicate more clearly that the first graph isn't ALL bad, neither is the second graph ALL good. The first graph can still be used to communicate growth and sanctification in a really healthy biblical light. Thanks to The Holy Spirit we will grow and become more Holy as we continue to walk in the light. I think I have found in my Christian life though that it is easy to picture that graph in my head and to pat myself on the back for how well I am moving "up" and see it as a way that I am maintaining my position before God.
ReplyDeleteSo I think we can still use it in the 4th Follow Up to explain growth, but also be able to warn against the dangers of self-righteousness and pride that can happen if we start to view the graph in terms of our standing before God. I still always draw the other graph too to show what our heart condition should look like in growth.
Thanks for bringing that up though!! See you at PCB?
This was a great talk Jess! You did a good job of collaborating so many great truth's in a concise way to point to the Gospel!
ReplyDeleteKim! I am so honored you listened to it! Thanks so much for your encouragement!
DeleteOk thanks; good thoughts! No problem. Yes PCB in all likelihood. Gotta keep up my perfect attendance!
ReplyDeleteJessss! Loved seeing you share from the Word. You spoke truth with such clarity--and I loved how you used examples that tie to every day life. So relate-able for students. Loved "seeing" you!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this, Jess. I finally got the chance to see it (Chiner blocks Vimeo...) and really appreciated the truth here. The Lord used it to convict me of the ways I marginalize sin. Calling out the way we view sin differently pre and post conversion was pretty poignant for me.
ReplyDeleteMiss you guys!
